The Hambantota District Coordination Committee (HDCC) yesterday  gave approval to the setting up of the proposed Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) power project with Chinese funding, Housing and Construction Minister Sajith Premadasa said yesterday.

He said the LNG power plant would contribute 400 megawatts of electricity to the national grid.

The Committee has given its approval for the project on condition it fulfills all environmental obligations.

The minister, who is the chairman of the Committee, told Daily Mirror that a team of officials from the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) made a presentation on the project.

He said the China Machinery Engineering Corporation (CMEC) which built the coal power plant in Norochcholai would carry out the LNG project as well.

“We placed certain pre-conditions for its implementation,” the minister said and added that proper precautions should be adopted in the discharge of effluents to the environment and that people affected by the project should be paid an acceptable compensation.
