The National Police Commission (NPC) had issued a directive to the Inspector General of Police to interdict DIG Nalaka de Silva, sources said yesterday.

This follows Law and Order Minister Ranjith Madduma Bandara’s recommendation to the NPC to interdict the DIG based on the outcome of the ongoing investigation into the alleged plot to assassinate President Maithripala Sirisena and former Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa.

The DIG is now on compulsory leave.

The Law and Order Ministry said Secretary Pathmasiri Jayamanne had sent the recommendation to the Police Commission last morning.

Minister Madduma Bandara recommended the NPC to suspend DIG Silva to facilitate an independent inquiry.

IGP Pujith Jayasundera sent DIG Nalaka de Silva on compulsory leave following a directive from Law and Order Minister on September 19.

The CID is currently investigating the alleged assassination plot. Meanwhile, DIG Silva, who failed to appear before the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) on Tuesday over the inquiry was expected to re-appear today according to sources.
