Health Ministry to increase drugs produced locally

Minister of Health Dr. Rajitha Senaratna has taken initiatives to produce 90 percent of Sri Lanka’s requirement of medicine locally by 2020.   


Currently there are three drug producing factories located at Horana, Kandy and Digana and two more factories are to begin production during the next year, Minister Senaratna said.   


The present annual production of 1922 million tablets and capsules is expected to increase to 3337 with the opening of the new factories.   


About 70 percent of drug requirement of the Medical Supplies Unit of the Health Ministry are supplied by the State Pharmaceutical Corporation.   Minister further said the JICA Institute of Japan has invested Yen 1240 million for the drug production in Sri Lanka while 46 more local and foreign investors are also expected to enter the drug producing industry.

   
The Parliamentary Committee on Public enterprises has praised the effort of the Health Ministry to locally produce the drug requirement as the country today spends more than Rs. 45 billion on import 
of drugs.
