President Maithripala Sirisena said the Seychelles government had agreed to release all Sri Lankan fishermen in detention in that country for poaching in their waters, on his request during his tour to Seychelles Islands last week.
“I raised the issue with the Seychelles President Danny Faure during the bilateral talks and he readily agreed to release all Sri Lankan fishermen under arrest for violating the maritime boundary line of that country,” President Sirisena said, while addressing the ‘Miridiya Waruna 2018’ awards ceremony held at the BMICH, yesterday.   “The fresh water fishing industry is a vital sector in the national economy.  In 2014, the budgetary allocation for the fresh water fishing industry was only Rs. 358 million.  But this government allocated  Rs. 2,435 million for the fresh water fishing sector in 2017.  Steps would be taken to triple fresh water fish production in the next two years,” President Sirisena said.   A  special scroll was handed over to the President by the rural fisheries organizations, and the President said he would take steps to fulfill all the demands listed in this document.

This award ceremony was organized by the National Aquaculture Development Authority of Sri Lanka.   President Sirisena also presented the ownership certificates of fishing boats and equipment to the fishing community.

A special award was presented to the President by the fishing community.   Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development Minister Vijith Vijayamuni de Zoysa, State Minister Dileepa Wedaarachchi, Deputy Minister Ameer Ali and the National Aquaculture Development Authority Chairman Nuwan Prasanna Madavanarachchi participated at this occasion.
