The Pelawatte branch of leading clothing store ‘Cool Planet’ was gutted by a fire that broke out last morning. However, no casualties were reported.

Police said the fire fighters were only able to douse the fire five hours after it erupted at around 11.00 a.m. They said the blaze completely destroyed the store and caused damage to several neighbouring shops.

“Employees and customers indoors were evacuated immediately. More than 10 trucks from the fire brigade units in Kotte, Colombo, Dehiwala and Battaramulla were deployed to the location to douse the fire with the assistance of fire fighters attached to the Air Force and the Army. The Air Force also deployed a Bell 212 helicopter with a ‘Bambi’ bucket for the operation,” they said.

Police said the cause and damage of the fire was yet to be ascertained. Talangama Police are conducting investigations into the incident. However, bystanders believe that the fire may have erupted from the power generator outside the store.

The Kottawa-Borella 174 bus route was closed due to the commotion.
