Special High Court Trial against Gamini Senarath from Oct. 29

The trial of the first case to be called before the Special High Court at Bar against former President’s Chief of Staff Gamini Senarath and three others was fixed to be heard daily from October 29.

The three-member bench of Permanent High Court of Trial –at – Bar Justices Sampath Wijeratne, Sampath Abeykoon and Champa Janaki Rajaratna also further fixed to call the case on September 28 for the Deputy Solicitor General Thusith Mudalige to hand over the relevant documents of the case to the accused.


The Court also issued summons on the 1st 2nd and the 3rd prosecution witnesses to appear in court on October 29 to give evidence during the trial. On the earlier call date, the court released the accused on a cash bail of Rs. 100,000 with two sureties of Rs. 1 million each. The passports of the accused were impounded by the court, Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s Chief of Staff Gamini Senarath, former Director of Sri Lanka Insurance Corporation (SLIC) Piyadasa Kudabalage, Director General of the Samurdhi Development Department Neil Bandara Hapuhinna and Lasantha Bandara have been indicted for criminal misappropriation of public funds to the tune of Rs. 500 million.
They were indicted under the Public Property Act, Penal Code, and Prevention of Money Laundering Act.


The Attorney General has indicted the accused with 21 counts. He has also listed 62 witnesses and 92 documents as productions.


The accused were alleged to have misappropriated Rs. 500 million of public funds which had been given by Litro Gas Company to Canwill Holdings Ltd. at Helanco Hotels and Spa.
