The Cabinet yesterday decided to reverse the five-rupee price hike imposed by Prima Company on a kilo of wheat flour on the basis that it has been done in an ad-hoc manner, it is learnt.

Ministers Nimal Siripala de Silva and Dr. Sarath Amunugama were critical of the move to increase wheat flour price in this manner by this company which is the sole supplier of wheat flour. They are reported to have said that the prices of essential items should not be increased arbitrarily in the country.

President Maithripala Sirisena is also reported to have said that government implemented pricing formulas on items such as fuel, but their cascading effect on the prices of other items was disproportionate.

Citing the five rupee price hike on a kilo of wheat flour, he said the price of a loaf of bread with wheat as the main ingredient would rise disproportionately.

The Cabinet also discussed the proposed bus fare hike. It discussed that though four percent hike would suffice for bus operators, they had demanded a ten percent increase.
