President Maithripala Sirisena said on Thursday that those engaged in trade union action must think of the rights of the people just like they thought about their salaries and privileges in a humane manner.

He said this when participating in a ceremony held at the Viharamahadevi Park in Colombo and highlighted the fact that it was not the government that suffered work stoppages but the people.

I have restored democracy, the rule of law, media freedom and the independence of the judiciary. The public servants and trade unions enjoy a new found freedom and security

The President said the public transport service and the free health service were not used by the rich, but by the underprivileged people in the country and recalled with regret the severe inconvenience faced by the people including the students who were sitting the A/L examination.

”I have restored democracy, the rule of law, media freedom and the independence of the judiciary. The public servants and trade unions enjoy a new found freedom and security. The media, the websites in particular use the freedom to the fullest to insult and abuse me and assassinate my character through distortion, fabrication and misinformation. You must spare a few minutes before you resort to this kind of mud slinging campaign, what could have been your fate if you did those things under the previous regime. The truth is that not only you but even your place of residence would have vanished without a trace,” he said.

The President said that anyone could hold discussions with the Government at any time to find solutions for their issues and said the present government never used guns against protesters like what the previous government did.
He urged trade unions, including the railway employees and the doctors to take steps to solve their problems in an intelligent and humane manner without causing hardships to the innocent people of the country.
