The police in Balangoda were looking for a ten-year-old boy who had disappeared after going into a nearby forest in search of his father who had gone to fetch firewood. The incident had taken place on Friday (20).

The ten-year-old resident of the Samanalawewa village in the Balangoda Police division was in year 5 at the Samanalawewa government school and was due to sit for the forthcoming scholarship examination. His whereabouts were unknown as late as yesterday (22).

The police said a leopard had been roaming inside this forest and several people had been injured after falling victim to it. A search operation had been launched by the police with the assistance of villagers from the area. They had the added help of Police dog “Daddy” that was sent from the Ratnapura HQ Police to take part in the hunt for the little boy.

The child’s mother had inquired about the boy from his father who came back home alone after collecting firewood. On being told that their son did not come to meet him they had rushed to the police station and lodged a complaint.
