Under the patronage of Megapolis and Western Development Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka, construction work of the Maharagama-Navinna bus depot commenced recently.

The minister said they were planning of constructing a commercial complex at the site.

“Construction work of the bus depot will be completed by the beginning of next year. Short distance bus services, presently being operated near the Bo-tree in Maharagama, will be moved to the new depot. This will ease traffic congestion in the town. A similar programme was initiated in Homagama recently,” he said.

On a different note, the minister said an agreement had been reached with the Irrigation Department to protect the embankment of the Boralesgamuwa tank from erosion and to construct a jogging path around it. Its construction will begin this week and complete by year end.

“As the second step, we are hoping to broaden the bund of the tank to provide more space for vehicular movement. There is also a mention in the Urban Development Plan that the area under the periphery of the Boralesgamuwa tank is to be extended in stages up to Pillawa, and also to launch an action plan to extend this green valley up to the National Youth Services Council and the Jayawardenepura  University. We envisage implementing these development efforts in the near future,” he said.
