The 20th Amendment to the Constitution, brought by the JVP, has been announced in the Gazette clearing the stage for the Cabinet to take it up for consideration, it is learnt.

The bill, if enacted, will provide for the abolition of Executive Presidency.

Instead, there will be a President appointed by Parliament with reduced powers.

The JVP handed over the draft bill to Speaker Karu Jayasuriya earlier. Afterwards, the bill was sent to the Attorney General as per the procedure. After clearance from the Attorney General’s Department, it has been Gazetted at the moment.  Asked about the bill, Leader of the House Minister Lakshman Kiriella said any bill for the Constitutional Amendment should get clearance from the Cabinet.
