There were approximately 200 different development projects that were already identified for implementation in the Western Megapolis, Minister of Megapolis and Western Development Champika Ranawaka said yesterday.
“Naturally, the number is bound to grow and the projects bound to evolve. This is because this mega development initiative is evolutionary by its very nature,” the Minister said addressing a conference.

Speaking of the country’s development in relation to other economic hubs, Ranawaka said that the national physical plan of the country was developed with one economic corridor connecting the east of the island to India, Bangladesh, China and the whole of East Asia and the West to West and East Africa, the Middle East and Europe.

Avoiding over-planning and leaving the desired flexibility for organic evolution of the detailed plans and their implementation within the master spatial plan was a conscious guiding principle that was observed throughout the process of developing the master plan, he said.

“The 200 projects were grouped into ‘Ten Mega Projects’ with the majority of the development activities identified in the planning process, based on a mainly functional and partly geographic non-exhaustive categorization. The first three of them are major infrastructure development projects. The others represent different thematic projects and their combinations.”

The ‘Ten Mega Projects’ are Transport, Energy and Water, Housing and Relocation of Administration, Environment and Waste Management, the Aero Maritime Trade Hub, ‘The High Rise’ – Central Business District, Industrial and Tourist Cities in Mirigama, Horana, Negombo and Aluthgama, Science and Technology City, ‘Eco Habitat’ and Plantation City, ‘Smart Nation’- The Smart City Development Project and ‘Tranquility’ – The Spiritual Development Facilitation.
