The Colombo South Teaching Hospital sources informed that many patients suspected of having contacted the viral influenza are seeking treatment at the teaching hospital and the wards are now full of patients suffering from fever, flu and cough.

When inquired from the Hospital Director Dr. Asela Gunawardene he said that it was too early to state that patients affected by the Influenza virus had sought treatment at the hospital, as a large number of patients suffering from flu, cough, and fever are reporting to the hospital daily and until they are clinically diagnosed as being affected by the virus it cannot be stated that they are victims of the virus. One person had been identified as suffering from this virus as shown by clinical tests.

He further said  it is common that many patients with the above sicknesses are reporting daily to the hospital and in the event of any detection made about anyone among them infected with this virus, the hospital is fully equipped to treat such patients.

This viral fever which originated in the South a few months ago had caused the deaths of about twenty children as reported from Matara, and Karapitiya hospitals in Galle.
