Sword attack in Jaffna Five suspects arrested, one shot dead

Five suspects were arrested in connection with a sword attack at Mallakam Junction in Tellippalai,  Jaffna on Sunday.

Police Spokesman Ruwan Gunasekara said a 33-year-old man was killed when police opened fire at a group of people who attempted to assault two policemen with swords.  


He said the policemen from the Chunnakam Police Station were on their way to investigate an incident at Telippalai  when they noticed two groups of people clashing with each other wielding swords and clubs.  


“The policemen had intervened in an attempt to disperse the two groups but they had turned on the policemen and attempted to attack them with the swords prompting the policemen to open fire killing 33-year-old  resident of Mallakam,” SP Gunasekara said and added that two men injured in the clash were admitted to the Telippalai Hospital.  


He said five suspects including the two injured, were arrested and a motorcycle which was damaged in the clash taken into police custody.   


Police and STF personnel had been deployed in the area to tighten security.
